If you have looked at red light devices for hair, you have probably seen some confident claims. Here is a more careful version.
The basic idea
Low-level light therapy (LLLT) uses red and near-infrared light, usually somewhere around 630 to 850 nanometres. The proposed mechanism is that light at these wavelengths is absorbed by cells in and around the follicle and nudges them toward a more active growth phase. That is the theory. It is plausible and it is studied, but it is not fully settled.
What the research shows
Reviews of LLLT for pattern hair loss report small but measurable increases in hair count across a number of randomised trials. The key word is small. These are averages, some people in every trial saw nothing, and the studies typically ran 16 to 24 weeks before measuring.
One more thing worth knowing: the devices used in published trials publish their irradiance, meaning the actual light energy delivered. Most consumer devices do not. That makes it genuinely hard to compare a trial device with something bought online, and it is a reasonable thing to be sceptical about.
What it will not do
It will not bring back follicles that are gone. It is not a substitute for medical treatment, and it is not a treatment for any medical condition. If your hair loss is sudden, patchy, or accompanied by other symptoms, that is a conversation for a doctor or dermatologist rather than a shopping decision.
A reasonable expectation
If you use a device consistently for four to six months, a realistic hope is modest improvement in density and condition. If a seller promises regrowth on a fixed timeline, they are telling you something the evidence does not support.
